CULLUM, John
John Thomas Cullum was born at Bungay, Suffolk in 1838, eldest child of Thomas Cullum, a master carpenter, and his wife Emma, née Winter (1818-1853), who was the sister of Cornelius Winter, who married at Bungay St Mary on 26 April 1836. In 1851, John was a 12-year-old, living at Bridge Street, Loddon, Norfolk with his parents, 36-year-old Thomas and 37-year-old Emma, with four siblings Charles 10, born Bungay, Emma 9, born Peasenhall, Suffolk, Ambrose 7 and newly born Rosa, both born at Loddon. John studied at the Norwich School of Art, from where in 1855, he exhibited at Gore House, Kensington, London and where he won a medal for shading in chalk. In 1861, John was still living at Loddon, being described as a heraldic artist. He married in the Wangford district of Suffolk in 1865, Mary Elizabeth Dann and in 1881, a 42-year-old decorative artist, living at 36 Haberdasher Street, Shoreditch, London with his 45-year-old wife Emma, born Denton, Norfolk. In 1896, recorded as a 'bamboo furniture manufacturer' living at 217 Hackney Road, N.E. but by 1901, a 62-year-old artist & photographer living at 203 Union Street, Tormoham, Devon with his 65-year-old wife. John Thomas Cullum died in Devon in 1913, aged 74.
