Angela Mary Burfoot

Angela Mary Burfoot was born at Staines, Middlesex on 21 January 1934, second child of Frederick Burfoot (17 May 1894-17 September 1973), a bank manager, and his wife Dorothy née Dyson (19 November 1893-1959), who married at Perivale Church, Ealing on 3 October 1921 and in 1939, were living at 58 Greenlands Road, Staines, Middlesex with elder sibling John (born 14 May 1927). Angela was educated at Lady Eleanor Holles School for Girls and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London but between school and college, she worked in a beer bottle factory. During her time at the Slade, 1952-1956, Angela studied under Sir William Coldstream (1908-1987) and was tutored by Bernard Arthur Ruston Carter (1909-2006). During her postgraduate year, Angela carried her first daughter Miranda in a basket, to life-drawing classes yet still managed to win the Henry Tonks prize also winning the Wilson Steer prize for still life. She became acquainted with Duncan Grant (1885-1978) and Edward Ardizzone and she and her future husband, artist Ian Armour-Chelu, whom she had met at Slade, with their three small daughters were making a precarious living illustrating book jackets and undertaking any artistic commissions that came to hand and they married in the Blyth district of Suffolk in 1965. As Angela M Burfoot, she exhibited at the Royal Academy and in 1968, they put a poster outside their Rumburgh Place farmhouse announcing an exhibition of their paintings when their works sold well, after which, their annual exhibition at Rumburgh became a magnet for art lovers from Suffolk and beyond. Angela also had exhibitions in Aldeburgh, Colchester, London and across the country, she also exhibited from Rumburgh at the Ipswich Art Club in 1977, two paintings 'Poppies and Edwardian Tablecloth' and 'Primula'. Angela, who worked in oils, was fascinated by modern painting such as the work of Euan Uglow (1932-2000) and Claude Rogers (1907-1979). Angela Mary Armour-Chelu travelled extensively in Europe and in the autumn before her death on 25 February 2006, she was painting landscapes in Spain.
