KING, Belinda

1944 - ?

As Belinda J. Robson, she was born at Nakuru, Kenya in 1944, daughter of George Robson and his wife Pamela née Lloyd and spent her childhood in Kenya. Belinda married at Henley, Oxfordshire in 1972, Stephen J. King and paints under the name of Belinda King. Belinda studied painting at St Martin's School of Art in London, being awarded a National Diploma of Design in 1966, which was followed by a postgraduate teaching diploma at Culham College in Oxfordshire. Belinda then spent several years teaching art before raising a family and concentrating on her own work. An original member and former chairwoman of Gainsborough's House Print Workshop, Sudbury and for many years a member of Twelve Printmakers. Since 1974 Belinda has taught drawing, painting and printmaking in Adult Education including at Wilson Marriage Adult Education Centre in Colchester, Essex and Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury where she also took regular evening classes and summer courses. She employs a variety of printmaking techniques, including wood engraving, wood, and linocuts, screenprints, etching, intaglio collagraphs and monoprints and many of her prints are about the human psyche with images allegorical, with sources ranging from mythology and religious imagery to dreams and memories of a childhood in Africa. Belinda worked as a printmaker for many years before returning to landscape painting, mainly in oils but also works in acrylics and watercolour which are worked in her studio at Assington, Suffolk from very quick pencil sketches without too much detail which leaves her free to interpret them freely, being drawn to dramatic fleeting effects of light. Belinda, who is a member of the Suffolk Open Studios, runs regular private classes and short courses from Assington Village Hall. She exhibits regularly including Brushstroke Exhibition at Sudbury Arts Centre; Burgh House Museum, Hampstead; Sea Pictures Gallery, Clare; Apex Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe; Edmund Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Aldeburgh Gallery, Suffolk; Geedon Gallery, Fingringhoe, Colchester; Gallery 47, Sudbury, Suffolk; Pond Gallery at Snape Maltings, Suffolk; Blackthorpe Barn, Roughham; Wingfield Art Centre, Suffolk and has also shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Galerie Latteman, Darmstadt, Germany. Some of her prints and technique are featured in ‘Printmaking Traditional and Contemporary Techniques' (2008), and in ‘The Coach House in Gainsborough’s Garden’ edited by Miranda Mott.
