McDOWALL, William

1905 - 1983

William Douglas McDowall was born at Walthamstow, Essex on 26 October 1905, eldest child of William McDowall (1872-1915), a stick mounter, and his wife Amy Maud Frederice née Orchard (7 April 1874-1943), who married at Walthamstow in 1903. In 1911, young William was a 5-year-old, living at 39 Kenilworth Avenue, Walthamstow with his parents, 38-year-old William and 36-year-old Amy, with a younger brother, 1-year-old Bernard Frederick, his father died in 1915 but the family remained living at Kenilworth Avenue, Walthamstow. William married at Romford, Essex in 1939, Marjorie S. Ford (born 16 June 1914) when William was a silk merchant, living at 49 Balgonie Road, Chingford, Essex with his wife Marjorie, widowed mother Amy and his brother Bernard Frederick (born 11 March 1910). A member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited from 14a Old Barrack Road, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1977 'Chelsea Rooftops in Autumn' and a further four pictures the following year and in 1980 exhibited four pictures' 'Roses', 'Spanish Village', 'Sardinian Coast' and 'Dubrovnik'. William Douglas McDowall died at 14a Old Barrack Road, Woodbridge on 18 March 1983.
