TAYLOR, Monica

1922 - 2019

As Monica Wright, she was born at Hampton, Kingston-upon-Thames in 1922, daughter of Arthur Wright (3 March 1895-), a shop assistant, and his wife Maud Elizabeth née Lindsey (15 December 1896-1973) who, in 1939, were living at 27 Park Road, Twickenham. Monica studied etching part-time at Harrow School of Art and, as an evening student, painting and drawing when one of her tutors was Charles Bartlett and she was introduced to screen-printing by Michael Carlo. She had several of her works exhibited at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. She married in 1948, Stanley Arnold Taylor (12 December 1922-18 December 2003) and they lived at Kenton, Middlesex for some 30 years and in 1977, when the Post Office Research Station relocated to Martlesham Heath, they came to Suffolk. A member of the Ipswich Art Club, exhibiting from 'Churchside', Otley, near Ipswich in 1977, two paintings 'A Suffolk Church' and 'In Memory of the Elm', three the following year and four in 1980 'Three Sunflowers', 'Through the Trees', 'Road up the Hill' and 'Monday Evening' and was a regular exhibitor including in 1997 'Up the Garden Path' and 'Peaceful Evenings'. Monica also ran simple printmaking sessions for children at Christchurch Mansions, Ipswich during school holidays. Her husband retired in 1982 when he continued his hobbies which included printing the pictures and cards by Monica. Following the death of her husband in 2003, about 2005 Monica moved to the nearby village of Grundisburgh where a second garage was turned into an art studio and Monica joined the local art club and the local history society, entering village shows and painted more watercolours and oil-paintings. Monica Taylor later moved into Witnesham Nursing Home where she spent her last few months and died on 22 April 2019, she had four children. Several of her watercolours were sold at the Clarke & Simpson auction on 24 February 2020. (The Grundisburgh and District News-Issue Number 253, Autumn 2019.)
