BRUCE, Nigel Macauley

1906 - 1998

Nigel Macauley Bruce was born in New Zealand on 6 February 1906, son of Robert Perry Bruce (1861-10 June 1914) and his second wife Olive Maud née Macauley (1875-1968), who married on 19 August 1903. Nigel came to England in 1926 and he married at North Cotswold, Gloucestershire on 7 December 1940, as her third husband, Helen Kayler (1 December 1905-1996), who married her first husband Harold Earnest Beale Holden (1899-1967) in 1930 and, following their divorce in 1934, her second Alfred Basil Woodhall (1897-) in 1935, and in 1939 she was of Alderton Hall, Woodbridge, Suffolk. About the time of his marriage, Nigel came to Suffolk, but serving in the armed forces, in 1941 was of Queen Elizabeth Nursing Home, Sevenoaks, Kent and saw service in Burma wining the Burma Star. Nigel's works are influenced by the French Impressionist School and has painted many local scenes and exhibited at New Gallery, Ipswich in 1965. A member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited from Little Grange, Hollesley, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1979, three pictures 'Ragwort on the Heath', 'Lily Pond' and 'The Rhone at Arles' and three more the following year 'Fruit and Champagne', 'Tresco Abbey Gardens, Isles of Scilly' and 'Shingle Street' and was a regular annual exhibitor. His other works included 'The Old Mill House, Ufford', 'Letheringham Mill' and 'Alderton Church'. Nigel Macauley Bruce died at The Little Grange, Hollesley on 30 January 1998.
