WOOD, David

1933 - 1996

David Wood was born in Scotland on 5 January 1933, son of Watson Wood, his grandfather was artist Frank Watson Wood (1862-1953). As a young man David joined the Merchant Navy and travelled to the Far East, mainly China and Hong Kong, returning with his sketch books which contained exquisite pen and watercolour drawings. David studied art at Edinburgh College of Art, the Sir John Cass College of Art, London and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He exhibited extensively, including at the Royal Society of British Artists; Colchester Art Society; Minories, Colchester; the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich and Chappel Galleries in Essex. A member of the Colchester Art Society and of the Ipswich Art Club where he exhibited three pictures from Gould House, Royal Square, Dedham, Essex in 1990, 'The Market, Lisbon', 'Medina, Tangiers' and 'Backyard, Minneapolis'. A well-known painter and printmaker and involved with the Gainsborough's House Print Workshop in Sudbury, Suffolk. His work is held in the collections of the Royal College of Art and the Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport. David Wood who had his gallery and lived for many years at Gould House, Dedham, died of leukaemia on 13 November 1996.
