Andrew Gordon Lambirth was born in Surrey in 1959, son of Gordon Frank Trevallion Lambirth (27 October 1916-11 August 2004), a secretarial accountant, and his wife Alelaide Harriet née Betteridge (1922-1 July 2011), who married in S.W.Essex in 1945. Andrew studied at Nottingham Trent University and commenced as a porter in London’s leading auction houses and began his career as an author by working with the veteran surrealist Eileen Agar (1899-1991) on her autobiography, which was published in 1988. Andrew became one of the capital’s leading critics and the author of many biographies and books of art appreciation. Lambirth’s own interest in collage was sparked by this early encounter, and he continued to develop gradually over the next two and a half decades, mostly in small-scale private work. His exhibiting debut as a collagist, took place at the prestigious 'Discerning Eye' exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries. A writer, critic and curator, art critic for 'The Spectator' 2002-2014 and has written for a wide range of publications including 'The Sunday Times' and 'The Independent'. Contributing editor of 'The Royal Academy of Arts magazine' 1990-2002 and the author of numerous art books including 'Ken Kiff', 'L.S. Lowry Conversation Pieces', 'Craigie Aitchison', 'Kitaj', 'Allen Jones' and 'Maggi Hambling' and many others. A major collector of contemporary art, particularly portraits and self-portraits, with a sideline in trees. He has exhibited at Minories, Colchester and lives at Stebbings, Back Lane, Washbrook, Suffolk.
