CLITHEROW, Robert

1942 - 2021

Robert John Clitherow was born at Saffron Walden, Essex in 1942, son of Robert William Clitherow (31 December 1907-26 November 1996) and his wife Millicent Helen Margaret née Huxley (15 October 1910-15 April 1986), who married at Saffron Walden in 1932. Robert studied at Colchester School of Art and in 1963 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools 1963-1967 where he won the David Murray Travelling Scholarship for three successive years and gained the school’s bronze medal for painting. He became a good friend of John Nash who exercised a strong influence on Robert’s work, particularly in the use of watercolour. He was also influenced by Edward Bawden who knew him at the Royal Academy Schools. Robert lived in Whepstead and in Sudbury, both in Suffolk and was a member of Colchester Art Society 1968-1981, Gainsborough’s House Print Workshop and the Ipswich Art Club. Robert exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at the Ipswich Art Club from Hermon, Mickley Green, Whepstead, Bury St Edmund's in 1980, two paintings 'Harwich Ship' and 'Aldeburgh Lifeboat' and in 1990 'Silver Peacock' also exhibiting at the Colchester Art Society; Minories, Colchester and elsewhere. He later moved to 46 Ballingdon Street, Sudbury, Suffolk.
