Charles Nightingale

Charles Nightingale was born in 1938. As a child he showed some talent in art and in the immediate post-war period won a few local art competitions in South-East London. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force 1957-1961, and later became a mathematician working at British Telecom 1971-1992 where he helped to develop the JPEG image format. A self-taught artist and took early retirement in 1997 since when has made painting one of his main activities and studied history and philosophy of art at the Open University and gives regular talks in Suffolk on painting & aesthetics, painting, photography, the real world, and the human mind. A member of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists and of the Ipswich Art Society and the Ipswich Arts Association and has exhibited at Ipswich, Bury St Edmund's, Newmarket, Aldeburgh, Woodbridge all in Suffolk and at Beckenham, Kent. Charles married at Ipswich in 1988, Dominique Anne Marie Micha-Roche and has his studio at Quilter Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk.
