HIGTON, Mita

Mita Higton was born and brought up in India, the vibrancy and colour of every facet of life in that sub-continent has shaped and formed her art. A watercolour and mixed media artist who came to painting late in life, never having picked up a paintbrush until she was 40. She is primarily self-taught, which has allowed her to find her own way painting impressionistic, colourful, and atmospheric images. Her individual style has evolved through experimentation and her work is now a combination of several medias, although primarily watercolour, overlaid with acrylic ink, gouache, and pen with the unpredictability of using quantities of watercolour and inks leading to exciting and often unexpected outcomes. She is inspired by the vistas of the East Anglian landscape where she lives, viewed through the framework of grasses and wild-flower meadows that abound throughout the year. Mita is a member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists and a member of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists. Her work is on show at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold and Ejart Creative, Woodbridge. She has also exhibited at Quay Gallery, at Snape Maltings and at the Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries, London. One of her painting 'Beached at Aldeburgh' was purchased by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as a gift for their Principal Conductor, Yutaka Sado and a more recent painting ‘Minsmere Reeds’ was awarded the Society for All Artists (SAA), Artist of the Year 2012, Best Professional and two of her works ‘Valerian Glory at Aldeburgh’ and 'Red Hot Suffolk Snow', were selected to be the album covers of CDs of Benjamin Britten’s music for cello, to celebrate his birth centenary in 2013. Mita is married to the artist Stephen Higton and their studio is at Castle Villa, Wilby Road, Stradbroke, Eye, Suffolk.
