As Valerie J. Nelson, she was born in 1947. She married at Petersfield, Hampshire in 1975, Cecil Hugh Montgomery Irwin (born March 1941) and paints under the name of Valerie Irwin. Valerie first learnt about life drawing in her thirties, which formed the basis of her practice and introduced her to movement and is a figurative artist working in charcoal, coloured chalks, and paint. Valerie works with a subject over several weeks, months or years, making both detailed observational drawings and quick action drawings in charcoal, looking at every aspect of the subject. A member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 12 East Lawn, Ipswich in 2006, three charcoal on paper items 'Interior of Bristol Bus', 'HMS Pickle' and 'Ransomes Lorry' also a member of the Colchester Art Society. Between 2005 and 2009, Valerie Irwin undertook the task of documenting the demolition and re-development of Cranfield's Mill on Ipswich Dock, attending the site nearly every day and with unprecedented access, Valerie complied a vast selection of observational drawings in charcoal, reflecting the nature of the work. This 'Change in Charcoal' collection comprises over 4,750 charcoal drawings, sketchbooks, digital images, diaries, and oral history which are housed in the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich.
