MILNER, Nicholas

Nicholas Paul Milner was born at Buxton, Derbyshire in September 1958, son of Peter William Milner and his wife Dorothy Margaret née Aldous, who married at Taxal St James, Derbyshire the previous year. Nick studied art at school with former Slade teacher Ronald Smoothey (1913-1996) and after graduating, was offered a deferred place at the Royal College of Art but decided to study at the University of Nottingham where he graduated with his PhD. He married at Basford, Nottingham in 1987, Sarah Margaret Knowles and they came to Ipswich where their three children were born. Since resuming painting his best-known works are a twist on Vermeer’s 'A Maid Asleep' (2006) and a modern version of Gainsborough’s portrait of the Ipswich MP, William Wollaston 'A Likeness of the Darkness' which was acquired by Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich in 2007. A painter and often uses the oil glazing techniques of the Masters painting Suffolk landscapes, people and sometimes people in landscapes. A Member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 23 The Avenue Ipswich in 2006 two paintings, an oil 'The Missing Man Returns' and a watercolour 'Back to Front'.
