FREWER, James
James Frewer was born at Stowmarket, Suffolk on 26 January 1811 and baptised at St Peter & St Mary, Stowmarket on 15 August 1811, son of John Frewer and his wife Mary Ann née Bradley. James was a stonemason at City Road, London when he married at St Margaret's Church, Ipswich on 3 October 1838, Anne Jane née Parker (1815-14 February 1882), of Soane Street, Ipswich. In 1842 he did much of the stonework on Woodbridge New Church and in 1862 also sculpted the corbels on Stutton Church near Ipswich and worked on All Saints Church, Sudbourne in 1878 and worked on several other Suffolk Churches. In 1851 a ‘mason’, living on Woodbridge Road, Ipswich with his 36-year-old wife and two children, James Buckingham (1844-1864) and Mary Ann Angelina 3, both born at Ipswich. Ten years later a ‘mason & sculptor’, living at 3 St Margarets Green, Ipswich with his wife Anne Jane and four children Mary Ann 13, Frank 9, Victoria Mandle 7 and Alice Eugenie 5, all Ipswich born. A sculptor and stone mason, living at Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his works at 3 St Margaret's Green, when he was declared bankrupt on 10 March 1872 and in 1881, a ‘mason’ living at Cemetery Road, Ipswich from where he exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1884 a ‘Carved Panel' (Statuary Marble). James Frewer died at Ipswich in 1887, aged 76 and buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 9 December 1887.
