FRISWELL, Harry Percy Hain

1857 - 1941

Harry Percy Hain Friswell was born at Bloomsbury, London on 6 February 1857, third child of James Friswell (1826-12 March 1878), an editor & scientific author, and his wife Emma Hain née Rumley (1825-30 July 1907), who married at Holborn, London on 11 September 1847. In 1861, Harry was a 4-year-old, living at 3 Southampton Street, Bloomsbury with his parents, 35-year-old James and 35-year-old Emma and his two siblings, Richard John 12 and Fanny Laura 10, both born in London, this was the home of Harry's 62-year-old grandmother Emma Rumley. Educated at a school kept by Revd Charles Butler at Church Street, Apsley Guise, Bedfordshire where he was boarding with 18 other students in 1871 and studied art in London and in Paris. In 1881, a 24-year-old ‘landscape painter,’ living at ‘Fair Home’, Station Road, Bexley Heath, Kent with his widowed mother, grandmother, sister and two of his mother’s nieces. He married at Kingston, Surrey in 1889, Margaret Ann Petch (1855-1915) and two years later they were living at Mount Pleasant, Caerhun, Tyn y groes, Conway, Wales and were still there in 1901 and from where in 1903, his assets were in the hands of the Official Receiver. By 1908 they had moved to Flatford, East Bergholt, Suffolk, the famous painting place of John Constable and in 1911, a 54-year-old landscape & figure painter, living at East Bergholt with his 54-year-old wife, born at Peckham, London and a 24-year-old nephew, Geoffrey Myall. His wife died in 1915 and he married secondly in 1919 Gladys Phelps Richards (1890-1933). A landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy and admitted a member of Royal Society of British Artists in 1897 also showing at Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Walker Art Gallery; the Royal Society of British Artists 1881-1892 and the Royal Society of British Artists, from Bexley Heath 1881, Tyn-y-Groes, Conway, Wales 1888. In 1908, an artist, living at Flatford Mill, East Bergholt and where his wife died in 1915 and an artist & poultry farmer of The Mill House, Flatford, East Bergholt when a receiving order was made against him in December 1918. A member of Ipswich Art Club 1908-1935 and exhibited from 'Chelsea', 13 Marlborough Road, Ipswich in 1933 four paintings, 'Sunbathing', 'The late Bertrand Whymper Elkington, Esq.', 'A June Morning' and 'Setting Sun and Rising Moon'. In 1939 a landscape & figure artist painter, living at 59 Brunswick Road, Ipswich. Harry Percy Hain Friswell died at Wokingham, Surrey in 1941, aged 84, he had no issue.
