FREER, Sally

As Elisabeth A. Dixon, she was born at Hammersmith, London in 1940, her mother's maiden name was Sainsbury. Sally originally trained as a printmaker at Sunderland School of Art and married at Birmingham in 1963, artist Roy Freer, and they had two sons, Martin (born 1964) and David (born 1966). Painting under the name of Sally Freer, a member and vice-chair in 2020 of the Suffolk Craft Society and her monoprints are created in the form of remembered impressions caught during weekly walks through the Suffolk and Essex countryside. The prints capture intricate hedgerows, ancient forests and waterways recorded in different weather conditions throughout the seasons. Each monoprint is a unique image and each image run consists of about three prints. The plate is inked up with up to five colours and overprinted with a further five distinct colours to achieve the feeling of a painting, where it is possible to see a kind of shimmer created by layers of colours. She has recently relinquished the position of Chair for the Gainsborough's House Print Workshop and Governor of Gainsborough's House Society. Her work is on show at several local Suffolk venues and can be found in Suffolk and Essex Galleries and at Gainsborough's House Shop and Sally exhibited at the 'Visions of Sudbury' at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2007, a screen monoprint 'Towards the Meadows', in 2009 a monoprint 'Pond, Reeds, Sudbury' and in 2013 another monoprint 'Bulmer Brickworks Debris'. Sally's paintings in public collections include Bedford County Hall; Bedfordshire Library Services and Bedfordshire Art Loan Services as well as several private collections around the region and abroad.
