BORGES, Carl

1963 - ?

Carl Peter Borges was born in the Colchester district of Essex in 1963, youngest of the three children of Paul Andrew Borges (1935-16 August 2015), an architect and artist, and his first wife Judith B. née Burge (born 1937), who married in the Braintree district in 1958. A self-taught painter and printmaker, his early work utilised a wide variety of mediums reflecting his experiences whilst travelling in Europe, USA, Australia, and Asia, with images expressing memories of the people and places encountered and others exploring the patterns, shapes and textures found in nature. From his studio at Stowmarket, Suffolk, his work proceeds through a series of sketches and sometimes photographs with the preliminary sketches usually from memory or imagination, but the composition develops a combination of sketches from the scene with photographs being used to fill in required details, the completed composition is then transferred onto the surface of the lino or wood block. Complex linocut images can be developed by layering several colours on top of each other. A member of Gainsborough's House Printmakers at Sudbury and Twelve Printmakers. His work has been exhibited at St John Smith’s Square in Westminster; The Gallery at Shepherds Market, Mayfair; The Geeden Gallery in Fingringhoe, Essex; The Grapevine Gallery in Norwich and in Suffolk at The Strand Gallery in Aldeburgh; The Jessica Muir Gallery in Long Melford and Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury. He married in 1994, Sarah E. Martin-Borges and has his studio at Prospect Place, Park Road, Combs, Stowmarket.
