NICKERSON, Dee

As Diane Elizabeth Lord, she was born at Spooner Row, Wymondham, Norfolk on 10 June 1957, daughter of Colin Francis Lord (born 7 March 1935) and his wife Phyllis Elizabeth née Gent (13 April 1938-15 January 2010), who married at Wymondham Abbey in 1956, two years after Dee's birth they moved to the adjoining village of Wattlefield. From an early age Dee, as she is known, found excitement, challenge, and escapism in making and looking at art and decided that she wished to become an artist and in 1962 won a Prize in the Brooke Bond National School Art Competition with her painting 'The Market Place' and again in 1967 for 'Stone Henge'. Dee attended Wymondham Secondary School for Girls taking 'O' Level Art in 1972 making posters and cards. On leaving school Dee worked in the local Briton Brush Factory and in 1974 married James William Nickerson (born 1953) and now paints under the name of Dee Nickerson, they had one daughter. In 1976, after a few setbacks, but with help and encouragement and learning along the way, she resumed her painting and drawing and now works as a full-time artist. In 1978 she moved to Thelveton, Diss, Norfolk where she joined the local art group, learning from an experienced artist in watercolour, oils, landscapes, and still-life, she also attended Diss High School Sixth Form art class for Life Drawing and in 1982 attended a 2-year Foundation Course at Great Yarmouth Art School, winning Art School prizes for drawing and her drawing book. Dee Nickerson worked for the Norwich branch of Liberty retail for 10 years from 1987 where she was able to develop her love of design and her paintings have a resilient design quality with the women often dressed in the most amazing fabrics. In 1992 she moved to Mendham, Suffolk and continued with her painting. Dee explores similar themes such as the countryside and country activities and has a huge following in East Anglia and is becoming a name well known throughout the UK and the rest of the world. Her first exhibition was at the Assembly Rooms, Norwich in 1981, followed by another the following year and Dee has exhibited widely including regular exhibitions at the Harleston Gallery; Southwold Gallery; Cork Brick Gallery, Bungay; Churchgate Gallery, High Street, Porlock and Primavera, Cambridge; Blondes Fine Art, London and elsewhere. Dee has her studio at Park Farm, Foxes Lane, Mendham, Suffolk.
