GOWERS, Cyril

1897 - 1954

Cyril Gowers was born at 108 Wherstead Road, Ipswich on 15 February 1897, son of Arthur Gowers and his wife Edith née Barton (22 December 1867-1956), who married at Ipswich in 1889, Cyril was a brother to Percival Barton Gowers. Cyril obtained a scholarship to study at the Ipswich School of Art but enlisted in the army during the First World War, after which he took a position as a bank clerk at Barclays Bank, becoming chief cashier at their Woodbridge branch. He continued as an amateur painter and was also a collector of East Anglian paintings. He married at Ipswich in 1926, Hilda Victoria Jackaman (20 April 1898-26 July 1970) and they had two children. They lived at New House, Hawstead, Bury St Edmund's before moving to 6(now 30) Victoria Road, Woodbridge. In 1939, a bank cashier, living at 6 Victoria Road, Woodbridge with his wife Hilda and daughter Beryl Margaret Lane. Cyril Gowers died at 29 Portland Crescent, Woodbridge on 6 January 1954, aged 56.
