Emily Cole

Emily Alice Cole was born at Ipswich in 1970, daughter of Brian S Cole and his wife Ruth M Phillips, who married in the Sudbury district in 1967. As a child the family moved to Norwich and Emily studied at Norwich High School for Girls and at Homerton College, Cambridge 1990-1994, gaining a B.Ed., she later enrolled on a B.A. Fine Art Painting degree at Norwich University of the Arts, winning the Vernon Crowther painting prize for her degree show and completed an M.A. in Fine Art in 2003. Since 1997, an artist in paintings, drawings, and photography about the contemporary landscape, operating from Norwich and London. Emily paints urban and pastoral landscapes in a quick gestural semi-abstract style and her paintings often have flaring fluorescent grounds, overpainted with oils to give a lively surface. She works in series and her paintings often suggest a journey as she researches the image, taking hundreds of photos from buses, trains and on foot, sometimes with a train or vehicle window frame placed in the painting to highlight how many of us experience landscape. She has exhibited internationally including shows in Brussels, Luxembourg, and Tokyo.
