EATON, George Clayton

1834 - 1900

George Clayton Eaton was born at Norwich, Norfolk on 20 November 1834 and baptised at St Peter Mancroft, Norwich on 2 January 1835, son of Thomas Damant Eaton (19 January 1800-31 March 1871), gentleman, silk mercer, and amateur photographer, and his wife Lydia née Ray (c1795-1868) who married on 30 August 1825. George studied at Carey's Art School in Bloomsbury, London and at the Royal Academy and in 1861 an artist, lodging at 33 Argyle Square, St Pancras, London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1867-1868 also showing at the Churchman's Club, Upper Walk, Market Place, Norwich in 1873. In 1871, an artist, living alone with a servant, at 2 Chapel Fields, St Peter Mancroft, Norwich. He married at Higham Green, Suffolk on 17 September 1873, Mary Ray (1843-18 January 1931), daughter of Thomas Reynolds Ray, a farmer of Gazeley, Suffolk, and his wife Sarah Ellingham, Mary and George were third cousins. George was heavily involved with Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries and his extensive travels are recorded in a series of sketchbooks (Norfolk Record Office, ETN 4/7/10). In 1881 the family were living at Cleveland House, 121 Newmarket Road, Eaton St Andrew, Norwich. George Clayton Eaton died at 121 Newmarket Road, Norwich on 25 June 1900, aged 87 and buried at Christ Church, Eaton St Andrew on 29 June 1900. His wife was still living at Cleveland House in 1901, with their two children, Frederick Ray (born 15 July 1874) and Florence Mary (born 1878) and where she died in 1931.
