MEYER, Frederick William

1846 - 1919

Summer Moonlight in the Ardennes

Frederick William Meyer was born at 4 Kent Terrace, Marylebone, London in late 1846, only son of John Meyer (1801-1863), an army clothier, and his wife Louisa née Frolich (4 April 1813-1878), who married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 6 November 1838. In 1851, Frederick was a 4-year-old living at 4 Kent Terrace, Marylebone with his parents, 48-year-old John and 36-year-old Louisa, with three sibling sisters, Louisa Maria 9, Fanny Jane 8 and Augusta 2, and they kept four indoor servants and were at the same address in 1861. By 1871, a 24-year-old artist in painting, living at 19 Boscobel Place, Marylebone, the home of 38-year-old sculptor, Charles Bell Birch (1832-1893) and his wife. In 1891, a 45-year-old 'artist landscape in oil, sculptor', living at 18 Effie Road, Fulham, the home of 48-year-old John Mansfield, lithographic artist & publisher, and his family. In 1911, a 64-year-old unmarried artist in oil painting, living at 33 Fabian Road, Fulham. A painter of shipping and coastal scenes and landscapes, his landscapes were mostly of Wales while his shipping and coastal scenes were of the English coast and of Brittany, France. He exhibited at Manchester City Art Gallery; the Royal Academy; Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of British Painters 1880-1895. He is said to have worked in Suffolk and did exhibit at the Ipswich Art Society but was not a member. Frederick William Meyer died at Fulham in early 1919, aged 72.

Many of this artist's works have been incorrectly attributed to an unknown Frederick William Meyer born 1869 who is not noted elsewhere, several being dated in the mid 1880s when he would have been only 15 years old and would have had to have exhibited at National Galleries when aged only 11.
