Thomas John Patchett was born at Deal, Kent in 1946, son of Thomas Sydney Patchett (14 February 1912-10 June 1985), a school master, and his wife Jessie Emily Scoltock née Whiteman (16 August 1913-12 October 2000), who married at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1938 and in 1939 were living at 346 Middle Deal Road, Deal. John studied at Grimsby School of Art; Kingston-upon-Thames College of Art and Brighton College of Art 1965-1971, and then settled in Adelaide, Australia where he lived for some 19 years, during which time he regularly returned to England painting and exhibiting his work. In 1994, he returned permanently to this country, settling in East Anglia where he has easy access to some of his favourite landscape, town and garden, marine and Broadland locations, preferring to paint as much as possible on location, resulting in his work having immediacy and a keen sense of light and warmth. John Patchett is regarded as one of the country’s leading exponents in the art of pastel painting and his love for the vibrancy and freshness of the pastels is a feature of his work and in 2017, became a member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists. John’s pastel works have become a regular feature in articles in the 'Leisure Painter' magazine. Besides holding over forty successful solo shows in Australia and England, John’s pastel works have been exhibited in Japan, New Zealand and at the Pastel Society; the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the 1997 Laing Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London, where his work was awarded the 'Guest Choice' Prize. He donated to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2013 'Sketch of Cambridge Market'. He married in the Waveney district of Suffolk in 1998, Helen M. Kilham and currently works from 20 Ballygate, Beccles, Suffolk. He is the author of 'Painting from the Heart' (2015).
