Mary Woodin

Mary J. Woodin was born at Chatham, Kent in 1962, second of the three children of Charles E. Woodin and his wife Susanne née Schlome, who married at Downham Market, Norfolk in 1959. Mary originally studied textile design at Manchester Metropolitan University and in 1988 went on to study for an M.A. in Ceramic Design at the Royal College of Art, London. Mary married at Penrith, Cumberland in 1990, Andrew J. Martindale, but continued to work under her maiden name. Having spent years as a freelance illustrator in London, working on many illustration projects over the years, in 2006, together with her husband and three children, moved to Orchard House, Eye in the Suffolk countryside which has provided an inspired hunting ground for her paintings. An illustrator and artist, Mary has been involved in designs and commissions for several significant organisations, one of her first major commissions being ceramic mural designs for London Underground’s South Kensington station. As a keen gardener, Mary was given an assignment from Running Press in Philadelphia, the opportunity to record a full year in her garden, season by season, which was published as 'The Painted Garden: A Year in Words and Watercolors'. Her most recent book was a 'The Painted Garden Cookbook' which Mary not only illustrated but has also written the recipes, which were inspired by her Suffolk garden. Her beautiful watercolour illustrations have been commissioned for a wide range of international projects including packaging, book and magazine publishing, advertising, and stationery. Recent clients include Waitrose, Tesco, M&S, Running Press, Country Living Magazine, Boston Beer Company, Galison.
