THURLBY, Fred

1865 - 1946

Frederick Thurlby was born at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire on 4 September 1865, son of Joseph Thurlby (1828-20 April 1889), stud-groom to the Duke of Rutland, and his wife Elizabeth née Welborn (1823-1912), who married at Nottingham in 1861. His father, a groom at Belvoir stables at Grantham, Lincolnshire died in 1889, when Frederick was also a groom at the Belvoir stables. In 1901, Fred was 'a grazier', living at Woolsthorpe Street, Grantham, Lincolnshire with his 77-year-old widowed mother and two unmarried sisters Kate and Ethel, but by 1911 was described as 'animal painter' at the same address and situation, his mother died the following year. He married at Leicester in 1933, Minnie Beatrice Browne (24 January 1866-10 July 1949) and in 1939, an artist, living at the Village Street, Chapel Hill, West Kesteven, Lincolnshire with his wife Minnie and mother-in-law Carrie Browne. Frederick Thurlby died at Woodsthorpe-by-Belvoir, Lincolnshire on 16 November 1946, aged 81. Fred Thurlby was an itinerant painter of prize livestock who worked around Lincoln and Grantham and his painting of a stallion is in the Suffolk Punch Heavy Horse Museum but is probably not a Suffolk Painter.
