WEBB, Conrade Manger

1797 - 1874

Conrade Manger Webb was born at Haverhill, Suffolk on 18 May 1797 and baptised at the Presbyterian Old Meeting House on 23 July 1797, eldest of at least 8 children of John Webb (1768-1840), journeyman weaver and author, and his wife Mehetable née Browne (1772-July 1852), of Steeple Bumstead, Essex, who married around 1796. There is a copy of his father's book of poetry 'Haverhill' (1810) inscribed ‘Conrade Manger Webb, Haverhill, Suffolk. June 18, 1810’ in which one of the poems is dedicated to Conrade. When of Edgeware Road, Marylebone, London he married on 16 July 1833, Emma Elliott, of Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk and on 5 June the same year, Conrade Manger Webb, cheesemonger, insured property at 119 Edgeware Road, London with the Sun Fire Office. He was still at Edgeware Road in 1841 with his 32-year-old wife Emma and four children, Conrade, Paul, Emma and Jubal, another daughter Julia was born in 1842. He seems to have gone into a partnership with Charles Patch in brickmaking at Acton, London, which partnership was dissolved on 2 February 1845. His record in the 1851 census incorrectly gives his age as 50 and his wife's name as Eliz. and in 1871 was still at Edgeware Road, a 74-year-old widower, cheesemonger, with his 34-year-old unmarried son Paul. In 1798 his premises were at 39-41 Edgeware Road, when he had architects design his cheesemonger's premises (RIBA54451). Conrade Manger Webb died at his Edgeware Road, London home on 10 July 1874, aged 77. Two of his paintings, both of members of the Webb family, are in the Haverhill and District Local History Centre and the Suffolk Record Office, Bury St Edmund's has his ambrotype portrait (HA 553/13).
