HALES, Thomas

1850 - 1897

Thomas Hammersley Hales was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk on 19 September 1850, son of James Hales (1810-1861), a mariner, and his Scottish born wife Jane née Hammersley (1811-1877) who married at St Margaret's Church, Lowestoft on 7 April 1842. In 1851, a newly born, living at Beach, Lowestoft, Suffolk with his parents, 40-year-old James and 40-year-old Jane and three siblings, James 6, George 4 and Eliza 2, all born at Lowestoft. Thomas married at St John's Church, Lowestoft on 17 July 1876, Jemima Waters. There was T. Hales of Lowestoft who exhibited two works at the Society of British Artists in 1864, 'On the Lookout' and 'After Work' but this artist would only have been 14 at this date. Thomas Hales exhibited at the Eastern Counties Industrial Exhibition at St Andrew's Hall, Norwich in August 1867 'King Alfred in the Cowherds Hut' and 'Dinnertime' for which he won a certificate of merit, also exhibiting at the First Exhibition of the Norwich Fine Arts Association at Exchange Street, Norwich in August 1868, all from 116 High Street, Lowestoft, Suffolk. Thomas Hammersley Hales was buried in Lowestoft Cemetery on 20 November 1897.
