ODAM, George Stanley
George Stanley Odam was born at 18 Northampton Street, Islington, London on 30 June 1898, son of Alfred Baxter Odam (27 November 1868-1 September 1944), a metal burnisher, and his wife Elizabeth Caroline née Oliver (1866-7 May 1935), who married at Islington in 1890 and in 1939 Alfred, a widower, was still living at 18 Northampton Street, Islington. In 1911, George was a 12-year-old 'school doctor's errand boy', living at 18 Northampton Street, Islington with his parents, 41-year-old Alfred, also a sign & fascia maker, and 44-year-old Elizabeth and six siblings, Alfred 19, John 17, Lily 14, George 12, Frank 10 and Edward 3, all born at Islington. George served as 2nd Lieut. in the Labour Corps during the First World War. George became a schoolmaster at Grundisburgh, near Woodbridge, Suffolk and he married in the Bosmere district of Suffolk in 1926, Muriel Gladys Tawell (3 November 1903-1964) and in 1939 became headmaster of the new Beccles Area School, living at 89 Grove Road, Beccles, Suffolk. In the Second World War George re-enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment. In 1955 he was headmaster of Beccles Secondary Modern School and was a member and exhibitor at the Beccles Society of Artists. George Stanley Odam died at 89 Grove Road, Beccles on 31 January 1979. His daughter was Mary Brown.
