Victoria Jane S. Hall was born in Holderness, East Riding of Yorkshire in 1972, but spent her childhood in Suffolk. Victoria studied at Suffolk College on a Foundation Course, Art & Design, 1990-1991; University of Northumbria, B.A. (hons) degree Fine Art 1991-1994 and graduated M.A. in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 1995. Victoria's humorous and sophisticated re-staging's of famous British and European paintings pays careful attention to lavish costumes and grand surroundings, in which she is always the leading lady. 'After Gainsborough' is both an homage to the landscape of her childhood and her teenage trips to the National Portrait Gallery, where she first saw the painting. Her research and preparation for the re-staging of each painting is done with meticulous detail, with careful attention paid to the distinct colour palettes from the muted renaissance oils to the vibrancy of Hockney's acrylics. It is rarely possible to make the photograph in its original setting, so Victoria finds locations that reflect the period of each one, and builds elaborate mini film sets. Victoria's series 'Portrayal' has been exhibited in solo shows at the Troubadour, London 2001; the Saltburn Artists Projects 2004 and the Lounge Gallery, London 2005. She has also taken part in group shows, including Photo 50 at the London Art Fair, as well as internationally in Korea, Australia, France, Switzerland, where she was artist in residence at the Triangle International Artist Workshop, and at the Kolnisches Stadt Museum in Germany. In 1998 Victoria received the Art Special Hanza travel award from the British Council and in 1999 the Individual Artist Award from the London Arts Board. Her work is held in collections at Hiscox, the Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Arts Council. She married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 2003, Daniel A. Shepherd and Victoria has her studios at Hill House, Offton, Ipswich.
