WARBURTON, Dame Anne Marion

1927 - 2015

Anne Marion Warburton was born at Woolwich, London on 8 June 1927, second daughter of Piers Grove Eliot Warburton (24 January 1896-5 October 1961) and his first wife Mary Louise née Thompson (15 February 1893-1954), who married at Parker Memorial Baptist Church, Calhoun, Alabama, United States on 24 October 1923 and in 1939 were living at 'Brickhurst', Linkfield Lane, Reigate. Surrey. Anne's siblings were Marie Louise Patricia [Duncombe] (30 January 1925-September 2010) and Revd Piers Eliot de Dutton Warburton (12 December 1931-30 June 2015). After the death of his first wife in 1954, her father Piers, married at Deben, Suffolk in 1960, Barbara Coke. Anne was educated at Barnard College, the women’s college of Columbia University taking a B.A. degree, and at Somerville College, Oxford. Anne worked at the London office of the Economic Cooperation Administration 1949–1952, at the NATO Secretariat in Paris 1952–1954, and for Lazard Brothers in London, 1955–1957. In 1958 she entered the Diplomatic Service working in the Foreign Office, the UK Mission to the United Nations at New York and served at the British embassy at Bonn and in April 1976, was appointed British Ambassador to Denmark where she remained until 1983. She retired from the Diplomatic Service and was president of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, 1985–1994 and on the Council of the University of East Anglia and during her working life held many other positions both at home and abroad. She received many honours and awards both at home and overseas and made a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1979. An amateur artist, she lived at 'Ansted', Thornham Magna, near Eye, Suffolk, where she had lived for over 30 years and from where she exhibited at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2007 'Sunshine & Shadows' and 'Looking over the Wall from All Saints Church', in 2009 a pastel 'Meadows' and in 2013, an ink & watercolour 'Garden, Gainsborough Street'. Dame Anne Marion Warburton died at her home at Thornham Magna on 4 June 2015, and buried in the nearby churchyard of St Mary's in Thornham Parva, she was unmarried.
