PETHERICK, Sibyl Gertrude

1887 - 1971

Sibyl Gertrude Petherick was born at Hopton, Suffolk, a village near Diss, Norfolk, on 11 July 1887, daughter of Dr Wallace Petherick (25 January 1858-15 July 1940), a general practitioner, and his wife Gertrude Elizabeth Moxon (2 January 1859-7 December 1940), fourth daughter of Edward Moxon, who married at Pontefract Parish Church, Yorkshire on 8 July 1886 when they came to live at The Common, Hopton. Sibyl was a member and exhibitor from Hopton at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1904-1907 also at the Suffolk Art and Aid Association exhibition at the Athenaeum, Bury St Edmund's on 28 October 1908. In 1911, Sibyl was still living at Hopton with her parents, 53-year-old Wallace and 52-year-old Gertrude, with her 8-year-old sibling Elizabeth Wallace. Sibyl married at All Saints' Church, Hopton, on 7 December 1916, 2nd Lieut. Frederick Frank Stokes (17 November 1880-9 January 1951), later a gentleman farmer, and in 1921 they were living at 14 Church Terrace, Lee, Lewisham. In 1939 Frederick was living at Tie Hurst House, Brimpton Road, Kingsclere and Whitchurch, Devon, and Sibyl, 'wife of F. F. Stokes' was living at Possil House, Esplanade, Budleigh, Salterton, Devon with a housekeeper and parlour maid. Sibyl Gertrude Stokes moved to 'Naini-Tal', Littleham, Exmouth, Devon where she died on 8 May 1971, leaving an only daughter Gillian. She illustrated 'The Amazing Adventures of Barney Boo-Roo and Johnny Jolly-Boy' (1910) by Robinson, Susan; Illustrated by Sibyl G. Petherick a collaboration between two English women, an unknown writer of original children's fairy tales and a fanciful illustrator scarcely known outside their small local circle.
