Stanley Clare Grayson

Stanley Clare Grayson was born at Worminghall, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 9 February 1890 and baptised there on 14 March 1890, twin with a sister Dorothy Clare, of Charles Grayson and his wife Hannah Maria née Clare (1852-27 August 1920), who married at Camberwell in 1886. By 1891, they had moved to Semer, near Hadleigh in Suffolk, where his father was the 32-year-old master of the workhouse and Hannah the 38-year-old matron, with 1 year old Dorothy. Stanley was admitted at Ipswich Municipal Secondary school in 1897 and in 1901 his father was guardian at the Nacton Workhouse, near Ipswich. By 1911, Stanley was a 22-year-old poor law clerk, at Aston Road Guardians, living at Union Road, Erdington, Warwickshire, when his father was a workhouse master at Stoke-on-Trent. He seems to have taken a farm, Benters Farm, Leigh near Uttoxeter, which was put up for sale with all the effects on 26 September 1916, the year that Stanley married at Hammersmith, London, Martha A. V. Antoine and they had one daughter Violet, born later that year. The marriage does not seem to have survived as in 1939 Stanley, a traveller portrait artist, describes himself as single, living at 66 Mount Pleasant, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, with six other painters, a secretary, matron and three servants. He may have been in the Royal Air Force as he exhibited at the Air Force Artists Associated held at the Natural History Museum, London in 1933 and exhibited his watercolours of the Lake District at Sunderland Art Gallery in 1940. He was of 19 Cheniston Gardens, Kensington when he died at the Brompton Hospital, Chelsea, London on 11 June 1967, aged 77.
