EBDEN, James Collett
James Collett Ebden was born at Loddon, Norfolk on 14 (or 16th) August 1794 and baptised on 24 August 1794, son of John Ebden (1751-4 September 1834), a surgeon at Loddon, afterwards of Stowupland and Haughley in Suffolk, and his second wife Elizabeth Collett, daughter of Anthony Collett of Eyke, Suffolk, who married at Woodbridge, Suffolk on 29 October 1793. Collett was educated for eight years under Dr Owen at Stowmarket, Suffolk and in 1812 proceeded to Caius College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. 1816, M.A. 1819 and ordained deacon on 16 November 1817, priest 1818 being elected a fellow and afterwards, was a fellow of Trinity College and where he was tutor 1817-1828, being elected a Junior Proctor in March 1821. In January 1828, he was unsuccessful in his application the Mastership of Rugby School, but in March 1832, elected master of Ipswich Free Grammar School which he resigned when appointed to the vicarage of Great Stukeley, Huntingdon and shortly afterwards on 19 November 1842 to the rectory of the adjoining King's Ripton, Huntingdonshire. He married at St Michael’s Church, Millbrook, Hampshire on 2 September 1828, Eliza, only daughter of the late Sydenham Feast Wylde [or Wilde] of Burrington, Somerset and had at least ten children. A member of the Athenaeum Club and of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and in 1851, a 56-year-old, living at The Vicarage, Church End, Great Stukeley with his 48-year-old wife Eliza, and their children, Richard Powney 17, Francis Thomas 11, Mary Elizabeth 10, all born at Ipswich and Edward James 7 and Alice Gertrude 3, both born at Great Stukeley. Whilst at Ipswich, a member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1835, where he was tutored by Henry Davy. His wife Eliza died at Great Stukeley vicarage on 16 April 1880, aged 78 and James followed on 15 February 1884, aged 89.
