HOYLAND, Mary Florence Maude
As Mary Florence Maude Hardy, she was born at 27 Brunswick Terrace, Leeds in 1857, youngest daughter of George Hardy, a schoolmaster, and his wife Martha Maria née Dobson (30 April 1923-1893), who married St Mary's Church, Barnsley on 28 December 1852. In 1861, Mary was a 3-year-old, living at Brunswick Terrace with her parents, 39-year-old George, born at Preston, Lancashire and 37-year-old Martha, born at Doncaster, Yorkshire and her 6-year-old sister Margaret and her father had three boarding pupils. Mary married at St Lawrence Church, Hatfield, near Sheffield on 25 January 1883, Dr Stanley Stenton Hoyland (10 July 1956-26 September 1940), a surgeon, when they moved to Ipswich. A painter in oil of landscapes and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1885-1897 and as Mrs Stanley Hoyland exhibited from Tower Place, Ipswich in 1885, two works ‘At Bealings’ and ‘Near Shrubland’. In 1891, a 32-year-old, living at 10 Museum Street, Ipswich with her 34-year-old husband Stanley, a surgeon, born at Rotherham, and their four children, Stanley Wall (1884-1962), Dorothy Swift [Snowden] (1995-1948), Hamilton (1887-1962) and Florence Mary [Read] (born 1888), all born at Ipswich, and they retained three indoor servants. Her husband served in the R.A.M.C. in the Suffolk Regiment, a lieutenant in 1885 and promoted surgeon-captain in 1893 and was a Colonel during the First World War. The family were still at Museum Street in 1901 but by 1911 had moved to 39 Berners Street, Ipswich with their two unmarried daughters, Dorothy, and Florence. Mary Florence Maude Hoyland died at 39 Berners Street, Ipswich on 7 March 1937, aged 79 and her husband at 'Wyncroft', Nelson Road, Ipswich on 26 September 1940, aged 84.
