FISH, Lucy Goldworth
As Lucy Goldworth Coe, she was born at Mere Street, Diss, Norfolk in 1838 and baptised on 25 June 1838, daughter of Jarvis Coe (1799-1881), house painter, and his wife Lucy née Goldworth, who married at Palgrave, Suffolk on 26 April 1827. In 1851, young Lucy was a 12-year-old, living at Mere Street, Diss with her parents, 51-year-old Jarvis and 48-year-old Lucy, with siblings Emma 21, a painter in watercolour, Anna 18, Jemima 17, Thomas 16, Salom 13, Alfred 11, James 9, Josiah 7 and Benjamin 2, two other children had disappeared from the 1841 census. Lucy married at Diss, Norfolk on 9 May 1859 her namesake, 32-year-old John Coe and in 1871, a 32-year-old, living at 8 Guildhall Street, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk with her 49-year-old husband John, painter & decorator, and children Jessie Goldworth 8, Lawrence 6 and Paul 2, all born at Bury St Edmund's. Her husband was buried in Bury St Edmund's Cemetery on 24 July 1871, aged 50, and Lucy married secondly at St Katherine Cracechurch, London on 3 August 1879, widower David Taylor Fish (25 September 1824-22 April 1901). As Mrs D. T. Fish, she exhibited at the Bury & West Suffolk Fine Art Society in 1882 pen-and-ink drawings, two painted screens and other items and in 1887 an oil 'Portrait of Mr. D. T. Fish'. In 1891, a 47[sic] year old wife of 62-year-old David Fish, a horticulturist, town councillor and member of the Board of Guardians and gardener to Sir Thomas Gery Cullum at Hardwick Hall, living at Rose Cottage, Hardwick Gardens, Cut Throat Lane, Hardwick, Bury St Edmund's with a stepdaughter and two children including David Sydney Fish (1881–1912) who became a gardener at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. Her husband retired in 1897 and returned to Scotland and in 1901, David was a 77-year-old horticultural lecturer & writer, living at 12 Fettes Row, Edinburgh, Saint Andrew, Midlothian, Scotland, with 59-year-old Lucy and children. Her husband David Taylor Fish, who was the author of several specialist garden books, died on the 22 April 1901 and Lucy Goldworth Fish died in 1928 and buried beside her husband in Warriston Cemetery in North Edinburgh.
