Hubert Palfrey

Hubert Palfrey was born at Bardwell, Suffolk on 16 November 1893, son of Walter Palfrey (24 October 1858-20 October 1946), carpenter & joiner, and his wife Adelaide Emma née Nice (1859-17 September 1927), who married at Walsham le Willows, Suffolk on 19 July 1893. About 1898, the family moved to 274 Spring Road, Ipswich from where in 1897, young Hubert was admitted to St John's Voluntary Controlled Primary School, Ipswich. In 1901, Hubert was a 7-year-old living with his parents, 42-year-old Walter and 42-year-old Adelaide, at 274 Spring Road with five sisters Kate 16, Irene 12, Altha 10, Bessie 9 and a brother Walter 5, all born at Bardwell with another sister Evelyn 1, born at Ipswich. In 1911, Hubert was a 17-year-old apprentice ship joiner at the same address with siblings Aletha, Walter and Evelyn with two new sibling Adelaide 9 and Victor 4, both born at Ipswich. Hubert married at Ipswich in 1922, Kate Eliza Root (13 March 1899-1983), daughter of George Lionel Root, an Ipswich printer and they later moved to Pier Avenue, Southwold. In 1939, a builder & contractor, living at 11 Pier Avenue, Southwold with a son, Ipswich born Ivan Hubert Palfrey (18 September 1923-22 November 2001), with Hubert's incapacitated wife Kate living at 88 Tuddenham Road, Ipswich. Hubert was a founder member of the Lowestoft and District Art Club in 1953 which celebrated its 21st anniversary in 1974. The Suffolk Record Office, Lowestoft has two of Palfrey's works, a painting of scene of an angling competition on South Pier, Lowestoft also a painting of a garden (LT 1271-27a). Hubert Palfrey died at 10 Monckton Crescent, Lowestoft, Suffolk on 30 May 1983.
