GALE, John
John Gale was born at Orford, Suffolk in 1789, son of John Gale and his wife Susan née Steggall. In 1841, young John Gale was a 51-year-old 'independent', boarding at Queen Street, St Nicholas, Ipswich, the home of 61-year-old widow Martha King and two other lodgers. Gale exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association exhibition in the New Lecture Hall at the Mechanics' Institute, Ipswich from Queen Street, St Nicholas, Ipswich in August 1850, six oil paintings 'Cottage Scene', 'An Autumnal Afternoon', 'An Insolvent', 'Evening Scene', 'Declining Sun' and 'The Withered Tree'. In 1851, being recorded as a 61-year-old artist, still at the same address in Ipswich with Martha King. John Gale died at Rushmere Hall, Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich on 8 December 1860, aged 71, he was unmarried.
