WELCH, Ida
Ida Welch was born at Holly Lodge, Marsh Gate Lane, Richmond, Surrey on 17 January 1854, fourth daughter of Patrick Robert Welch (1815-6 August 1867), barrister-at-law of Kilkenny, Ireland, and his wife Henrietta Leake (13 May 1821-2 January 1905), only child and heiress of Gilbert Francis Yaxley Leake, of Yaxley Hall, Suffolk, who married at Yaxley on 18 June 1840. In 1861, Ida was a 7-year-old, living at Holly Lodge, Marsh Gate Road, Richmond with her parents, 47[sic] year old Richard and 36[sic] year old Henrietta, with siblings Rose 9, born Yaxley and Agnes 4, born Richmond and they kept three indoor servants. Her father Patrick died at Yaxley Hall and buried at Yaxley St Mary on 9 July 1867 when his widow and family continued to live at Yaxley Hall. In 1871, Ida was a student at a Convent School at Boreham, Chelmsford, Essex and at an art school in London and in 1881, was living at 15 Kensington Park Road, Kensington, the home of 36-year-old barrister, James Aspinall and his family. In 1882 she exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Yaxley Hall, Eye, an oil painting 'View from Brayhead, Wicklow Co.' In 1891, a 35[sic] year old 'artist', living on her own account at Ovington Street, Chelsea, London with a visitor, 35-year-old Edith Wake and in 1901, a 46-year-old artist, boarding at Clapham Park Road, Wandsworth, London, the home of Charles Ringham, a joiner, and his family. Her mother died at Yaxley Hall in 1905 and in 1911 Ida was 'living on private resources', with her 61-year-old sister Mary, at 35 Lilly Ville Road, Fulham, London. Ida Welch died at Hammersmith, London in 1928, aged 72, she was unmarried.
