MATHEW, Francis Woodbine
Francis Woodbine Mathew was born at Lee House, Marine Parade, Dovercourt, Essex on 31 July 1896, youngest son of Gervase Frederick Mathew (11 February 1842-10 February 1928), naval paymaster-in-chief, and his wife Frances Sarah Hinchcliff (22 March 1860-19 July 1950), eldest daughter of Major Chamberlain Hinchcliff of Worlington House, Instow, who married at Instow Parish Church, North Devon on 27 October 1880. A brother to Kathleen Mathew and Doris Edna Muriel Mathew. Francis was a boarder at Priory House Boarding School, Dover, Kent and on leaving joined the Honourable Artillery Company. Francis became a priest and travelled both to Hong Kong in 1925 and to Bombay, India in 1937. In 1927 he exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Lee House, Dovercourt, two works 'Near Malacca' and 'Singapore: Inland from the Gap'. In 1939, a clerk in holy orders, living at 2 Grange Estate, Prodhoe, Northumberland. He married at St George's Church, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 17 April 1945, Frieda Widdas (8 June 1904-17 March 1983), a widow, daughter of Thomas Henry Blacklock of Brunton, Gosforth. Francis Woodbine Mathew died at Beckwood, Potters Bank, Durham on 1 July 1980.
