WILSON-GREY, Gertrude Mercedes
As Gertrude Mercedes Wilson-Gray, she was born at Norbiton, Surrey on 29 March 1882, one of the 12 children of Irish born William Robert Gray (c1831-8 January 1907), a stationer, and his second wife Mary Elizabeth née East (1845-1935) who married at Elham, Kent in 1883. William's first wife was Elizabeth Ann Pritchett (born 1834) who married in 1857 and had issue. In 1881 William, now a translator of languages, and Mary, stated as married, were living at 1 Clifton Road, Kingston with four children Raymant 10, born Gravesend, with Gwendoline Gavan 6, Kathleen Moya 4 and newly born Guido, all born at Brighton. In 1891, Gertrude was an 8-year-old scholar, living at Aindermatt, St Julians Farm Road, Lambeth, London with her father, 60-year-old William, now a publisher, with his wife, 45-year-old Mary, with siblings Guido 9, Dorothy Mary I. 7, Margarita 6 and Phyllis Theodora 4. In 1939 Gertrude, giving her birth year as 1894, was unmarried and living at Hawthorn Farmhouse, Blythburgh, Suffolk, also living with her was her unmarried sister Phyllis Theodora Wilson-Gray (born 16 January 1906 actually 1887), an invalid. Gertrude exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1941, two works 'Ophelia' and 'Ruins of Franciscan Convent, Walsingham'. Gertrude Mercedes Wilson-Grey was of Coniston, Barnett Lane, Wonersh, Guildford, when she died at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford on 25 June 1964, aged 82. They are recorded both as Gray or Grey.
