BARBER, Mary Anne Stannard
As Mary Anne Stannard Lucas, she was born at Hythe Street, Colchester, Essex in 1851 and baptised at St Leonard's, Colchester on 10 August 1851, second daughter of Jonathan Lucas (1819-1855), mariner, and his wife Sarah Elizabeth née Rigg (1823-1893), who married at St Martin's Church, Colchester on 28 August 1847. Her mother married secondly in 1858 William Watts (1803-1886), and in 1861, Mary was a 9-year-old living at Hythe Street, Colchester with her grandmother, 66-year-old widow Mary Ann Rigg, and with her 37-year-old mother, now Sarah Elizabeth Watts, her two siblings Sarah J. 12 and John 7 and her stepsister Elizabeth Lucas Watts 2. Mary married at St Leonard's Church, Colchester on 24 June 1872, Alfred Richardson Barber being taught art by her husband and painted as Mrs Barber. In 1881, a 29-year-old 'artist landscape & animal painter', living at Carlton Villas, 1 Wellesley Road, Colchester with her 36-year-old husband Alfred, and their three children, Claude Harold 8, Leonard Lucas 4 and newly born Mary Margaret. As Mrs Barber of 1 Carlton Villas, Wellesley Road, Colchester, she exhibited an oil painting at the Woodbridge Industrial and Art Exhibition in 1887, it was not given a title and was on sale for £4.10s. [£4.50] and was 'highly commended'. By 1911, they had moved to Lower Street, Stratford St Mary, Suffolk and in 1921 Mary Anne was an invalid, living at 69 Station Road, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex with her husband and three of their children, Dorothy Beatrice 35, an artist, Leonard Lucas 44, a teacher of music, and Geoffrey Robert 31, also a teacher of music. Mary Anne Stannard Barber died late in 1921.
