RAFFELL, Kathryn
As Kathryn A. Hunt, she was born at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in 1953, daughter of William J. Hunt and his wife Joyce C. née Howlett, who married at Witney, Oxfordshire in 1952. Kathryn spent her childhood in the Cotswold’s, later moving to London where she lived for several years before settling in Suffolk. Kathryn married at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in 1972, Peter M. Raffell (born 1950) and works under the name of Kathryn Raffell. Kathryn studied for a Fine Art Degree at University of Suffolk, specialising in traditional figurative portraiture mixed with a livelier re-interpretation of pattern and form. Her recent work captures the intensity of the gaze which explores ways to creatively build layers that shape the forms, exposing the under-layers of earlier painting that marry together to portray tone, shape, and pattern across the surface of the canvas. From her Ipswich studio, Kathryn has exhibited at The Atrium, Waterfront Gallery, University Campus Suffolk; Aldeburgh Cinema Gallery; Art Show at Pretty’s Solicitors, Ipswich; Firstsite Gallery, Colchester; Holywells Creatives at Holywells Park; Arlington’s Brasserie, Museum Street, Ipswich and elsewhere.
