BALDRY, Harry Leslie

1866 - 1890

Harry Lesley Baldry was baptised at St Matthew's church, Ipswich on 21 January 1866, son of George William Baldry and his wife Mary Ann née Marshall (1837-1917), who married at Downham Market, Norfolk in 1858. In 1871, Harry was a 5-year-old living at Margaret Street, Brighton with his parents, 36-year-old George and 35-year-old Mary, with six siblings, Edith M. 11, born at Norwich, William 10, born in Surrey, Grace 6, born at Norwich, Emma B. 4, born at Hastings, Percy G. 2, born in Cumberland and Ida 1, born at Brighton. By 1881 they had moved to 12 Mornington Road, St Pancras, London with the addition of five more children, Dora 8, born at Camberwell, Lillie 7, born at Wood Green, Gilbert 5, born at Margate, Isabel 4 and Constance 2, both born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Probably taught art by his father, twenty-one-year-old Harry exhibited at the Royal Academy from London addresses from 1887. Harry married at St Pancras, London in 1890, Florence Digby and they had one son Harry, born at Hampstead. On 29 August 1890, Harry shot himself at his home and that of his wife and father, at 28 Regent's Park Road, London, aged 24 and at his inquest it was stated that he had earned between £3,000 and £4,000 per annum with a verdict 'suicide whilst of unsound mind and overwork'. In 1891, his widow Florence was a 25-year-old, living at Belsize Road, Hampstead, London with her newly born son Harry with Florence's younger sister, 13-year-old Edith E. Digby. Harry's elder sister Grace [Fiske] (1864-1931), who was born in Norwich, was also an artist.
