HARRIS, John

1825 - 1881

John Harris was born at Whepstead, Suffolk on 21 April 1825 and baptised at St Petronilla Church, Whepstead, on 12 June 1825, son of John Harris (c1791-6 March 1867), a shoemaker, and his wife Mary née Merton (1797-1866). In 1841, young John was a 16-year-old apprentice to George Fitch, grocer & draper at Bures, Suffolk, but by 1851, a 25-year-old artist, living at Causeway, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk with his parents, 60 year old John, now a miller, and 55 year old Mary, with six siblings, Joseph 28, Elizabeth 24, Harriet 22, Samuel 20, Clarissa 16 and Henry 12, all born at Whepstead. In 1861, their address is given as High Street, Monks Eleigh and his father died in 1867, aged 76 when young John Harris, a beneficiary of his father's will was described as 'an artist'. In1871 John Harris, an artist, now head of the family living at Back Lane, Monks Eleigh. John Harris died at The Mills, Monks Eleigh on 12 January and buried at Monks Eleigh on 18 January 1881, aged 55.
