Basil Baxendale

Basil Francis Baxendale was born at Framfield Place, Sussex on 19 February 1890, son of Francis Hugh Baxendale (2 July 1862-23 July 1918), a director of Pickford Ltd., carriers, and his wife Emily Ann née Nicholls (24 November 1856-24 May 1942), who married at Cambridge in 1883. During the First World War, Basil served as an officer in the Royal Naval Reserves and was awarded an O.B.E. in 1919. He married at Chelsea, London in 1925, Amy Beatrice Grasby (13 February 1897-14 October 1974), the artist who worked under the pseudonym of Peter Baxendale. In 1939, an artist, living at 60 Oswald House, Northgate, Beccles, Suffolk with his wife, Amy. Basil Francis Baxendale died at White Lodge, Monkwood Ropley, Hampshire on 11 September 1965 and Amy died at Swan Hotel, Alresford, Hampshire in 1974. A portrait of Basil Baxendale by Philip Connard (1875-1958) was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1921.
