HARVEY, George Frederick
George Frederick Harvey was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk on 16 July 1909, son of Henry James Harvey (7 May 1881-11 February 1956), a longshore fisherman, and his wife Alice Isabella née Beavers (11 October 1881-11 April 1867), who married at Lowestoft in 1901. In 1911, George was a 1-year-old, living at 146 Morton Road Lowestoft with his mother and two siblings, Henry 6 and Arthur 5, both born at Lowestoft, his father was at sea. In 1939, an unmarried 'trawler fisherman and weekly artist' living at High Street, Wrentham, Suffolk with his mother Alice Harvey and siblings, Arthur Ernest Harvey (17 June 1905-1981), a fishing boat engine driver, Lily May [Meadows] (3 May 1912-1995) and Edna Violet [Read] (25 June 1919-1992). The fishing industry was in decline along this stretch of the Norfolk and Suffolk coast by the time of the Second World War with tourism taking over, moving in to enjoy the air, the newly built promenades, the frequent train connections with London. The visitors took photographs of the fishermen lolling against their boats: high Cossack hats, tight Guernsey sweaters, heavy thigh boots with metal cleats. Harvey, like many others with not enough money to live, indulged in painting pictures of boats and their surroundings, selling them to eke out a weekly wage and Harvey was both a fisherman and artist. George Frederick Harvey died at Brighton, Sussex in 1985.
