JACKSON, Herbert Parry Malpas
Herbert Parry Malpas Jackson was born at Kensington, London in 1868, son of Mason Jackson (1819-29 December 1903), a newspaper manager, and his wife Lucy Berriman née Tippetts (25 June 1838-4 February 1921), who married at St Philip's, Earl's Court, Kensington, London on 16 July 1864. In 1871, Herbert was a 2-year-old, living at Warwick Gardens, Kensington with his parents, 51-year-old Mason and 32-year-old Lucie [sic], with siblings Lucie Gertrude 5 and Arthur Mason Tippetts 4, with three indoor servants. In 1891, a 22-year-old 'artist', living at The Common, Southwold, Suffolk with his uncle 40-year-old solicitor William James Berriman Tippetts (1851-10 June 1936) and his family. In March 1900 gazetted 2nd Lieut. in 1st Cheshire Royal Engineers and fought in the South African Wars. As Herbert P. M. Jackson, he exhibited at the Royal Academy. He married at Kensington, London in October 1904, Catherine Roxburgh MacFarlane, whom he had met only one month, but was declared insane on 8 March 1905 and the marriage was annulled in 1908, at the time he was detained in a lunatic asylum in Liverpool, they had one child. Herbert Parry Malpas Jackson died at the Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries on 25 February 1929 leaving his estate to his sister, Lady Lucie Gertrude (12 September 1865-14 May 1957), who was the widow of Sir Walter Alexander Raleigh (1861-1922). Some of his works signed Herbert P. M. Jackson have been incorrectly attributed to Herbert Jackson (1909-1989).
