Mo Folkes-Miller

Maureen A. Folkes was born in Burgh Castle, Suffolk now in Norfolk, in 1947, daughter of Donald Edward Folkes (10 December 1917-1977), and his wife Maude née Newark (1924-2010), who married at Luton, Bedfordshire in 1946. Mo, as she is called, studied art, English and physical education at Loughborough University, Leicestershire in the 1960s and followed a career in teaching in the UK and in Gibraltar. In the years to follow, Mo had varied positions such as office work, modelling and as a supply teacher in London, fitting in painting whenever she had time. As Maureen Folkes, she married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 1980, Colin Brian Miller and now paints under the name of Mo Folkes-Miller. In the late 1980s, Mo and her family moved to France, where they purchased a house and the local hotel. In the 1990s, she moved back to Suffolk and in 2005, founded the Folkes-Miller Fine Arts gallery at Little St Mary's, Long Melford where they represented both local and international artists and where she also exhibited her own work, but she later sold the gallery. Mo’s paintings are lively, colourful, and atmospheric with strong shapes and depth of feeling. Her work is extremely varied, encompassing a wide variety of subjects favouring a loose, expressionistic way of working, inter-mixed with traditional methods ranging from representational to pure abstract. She moved to Saint Domineuc (Brittany) in France.
