WOODS, Patricia Mary

1929 - 2018

As Patricia Mary Gaskell, she was born at Edmonton, London on 14 September 1929, only daughter of the two children of John Wellesley Gaskell (18 April 1901-19 January 1941) and his wife Olive Elizabeth née Baker (26 September 1902-12 December 1990), who married at Marylebone, London in 1925. After the death of her husband, Olive married at Amersham, Buckinghamshire in 1942, John David Christopher Braithwaite (27 June 1911-2 July 1978), when Patricia took the name of Braithwaite. In 1946 Patricia Braithwaite began her studies at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts, her illustration tutors included John Minton (1917-1957), Keith Vaughan (1912-1977) and Edward Ardizzone. Also studying illustration at this time was the jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and Patricia and Humph married at Hampstead on 19 August 1948, they had an only daughter Henrietta Marie Lyttleton. Humphrey Richard Adeane Lyttelton (23 May 1921–25 April 2008), was the only son of Hon. George Lyttleton of Finndale House, Grundisburgh, Suffolk, Humphrey and Patricia divorced in 1952. Patricia married secondly at Chelsea on 20 January 1956, Richard Horsfall Temple-Muir (16 August 1923-23 June 1989) and they had two daughters and lived at Bildeston Hall, Suffolk. Patricia married thirdly at Kensington, London in 1992 Christopher Matthew Woods (26 May 1923-10 January 2016). During her career Patricia produced various magazine illustrations and book jackets, latterly concentrating on architectural studies in pen and wash and commissions to paint and draw private houses. She exhibited from 29 Friars Street, Sudbury at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2007 two works, 'River House' and '8 Friars Street'. Patricia Mary Woods died at Sudbury, Suffolk on 4 April 2018, leaving three daughters.
