BOWEN, Arthur Lloyd
Arthur Lloyd Bowen was born at Brook Green, Fulham, London on 27 November 1902, son of Francis Arthur Bowen (1876-1917), secretary to companies, and his wife Louisa Millicent née Lloyd-Evans (16 January 1877-1961), who married at Marylebone, London in 1900. In 1911, Arthur was an 8-year-old, living at 33 Thornyhedge Road, Gunnersbury, Brentford with his parents, 34-year-old Francis Arthur, who was born in U.S.A., and 32-year-old Millicent, who was born in Anglesea, Wales, and siblings, Manny Lloyd 11 and Cynthia Lloyd 4. In 1912, Arthur entered Queens' School for Boys, Kew, Surrey and in 1926 was a 23-year-old artist living at 559 King's Road, Fulham. He married at Kensington, London in 1929, Grace Anna D. Emslie (born 7 October 1900), who was born in Shanghai. In 1934 he was employed by the Tendring Institution in Essex for a series of wall paintings in the county including 'Aesop's Fables' in their Children's Homes. In 1939, an artist, living at 'Dogetts', Church Street, Stradbroke, Suffolk with his wife Grace, also described as an artist, with their son David E. L. Bowen (born 30 July 1930). He served in the Army during the Second World War after which his life deteriorated and he seems to have been a hospital porter at Solihull Hospital, living with his widowed mother at George Road, Solihull and who died at Solihull in 1961. He is probably the Arthur Bowen who died in Birmingham in 1959.
